PortMiami sends more than 7 million passengers off on their vacations every year, mainly to the Caribbean and throughout South America.

If your next journey starts here, at the southern tip of Biscayne Bay in downtown Miami, here’s everything you need to get there, through the terminal, and out to sea.

Where Is PortMiami?

PortMiami is located at 1015 North America Way, Miami, FL 33132, on Dodge Island, connected to downtown Miami by the Port Boulevard Bridge and the PortMiami Tunnel (Florida State Road 887).

It sits about 8 miles from Miami International Airport (MIA) and roughly 30 miles from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), both of which are common arrival points for cruisers.

The port has 10 active cruise terminals, each assigned to specific cruise lines. Knowing your terminal before you arrive saves time, which is especially true on busy embarkation days when traffic on the island backs up fast.

A note on Terminal J: it’s the only garage at PortMiami where parking must be paid upon arrival rather than upon exit—worth knowing if you’re sailing on one of the luxury lines that use it.

Terminal G is currently closed for reconstruction and not in service until late 2027.

For the most current terminal assignments, check PortMiami’s official cruise terminals page before you head out. Keep in mind that assignments can shift.

How to Get to PortMiami

Between our properties near the airport and the beach, our teams have pointed quite a few guests toward PortMiami over the years.

The route is easy, but a few things are worth knowing before you go, depending on how you’re arriving.

Driving

PortMiami is easy to reach by car from most of South Florida.

Take I-95 to Biscayne Boulevard, then follow signs for the PortMiami Tunnel. Parking garages are available at each terminal, patrolled 24/7, and don’t require a reservation.

Rates vary by terminal:

  • Most garages charge approximately $22/day for standard vehicles
  • Terminal B (Norwegian) and Terminal AA (MSC) are $35/day.
  • Valet parking across the port is also $35/day.
  • Oversized vehicles may pay more regardless of terminal.

One heads-up: traffic on the island gets heavy during peak embarkation windows, so we recommend building in extra time, particularly on weekends and during peak cruise season (November through April).

Flying In? Here’s How Far You Are

As our guests usually arrive through Miami and Fort Lauderdale international airports, we’ll cover the big two:

  1. From Miami International Airport (MIA): PortMiami is about 8–9 miles away, typically a 15–20 minute drive, but it really depends on traffic. Taxis charge a flat rate of $27 per trip; Uber and Lyft run a few dollars less.
  2. From Fort Lauderdale (FLL): FLL is a popular arrival airport for Miami cruisers, it’s about 30 miles from the port, with the drive running 35–45 minutes on a good day. Expect fares between $75–$100 by taxi or ride-share.

If you’re flying into FLL, consider building in an overnight stay in Miami before your cruise. The drive is manageable, but it adds a variable you don’t want on embarkation morning.

Shuttle from Your Accommodation

If you’re staying near the airport the night before, check whether your hotel offers a shuttle to PortMiami. Many do, and it removes one of the bigger logistical headaches of embarkation day.

Over at Regency Miami Airport by Sonesta, we provide guests with both complimentary airport transportation and a dedicated cruise port shuttle, so you can fly in, sleep, and get to the terminal without touching a rideshare app.

Public Transit

Miami’s public transit network can get you close to the port if you’re on a budget or have time to explore en route.

Take the Metrorail from MIA to downtown ($2.25), then transfer to the free Metromover toward College/Bayside.

From there, it’s a short ride-share to the port, or check whether Miami’s free trolley covers the last leg before you go, as routes do change.

It’s scenic and affordable; just leave more time than you think you need.

Embarkation Day: What to Expect

Expect to encounter many people at the port. To be able to process and admit so many guests, PortMiami strives to move efficiently, so you will probably find that cruise embarkation day moves fast.

Here’s what our guests recommend and highlight:

  • Know your terminal before you leave. PortMiami is large, and each terminal is dedicated to a specific cruise line. Pulling up to the wrong one costs you time you don’t have.
  • Arrive 23 hours before departure. Even if your cruise line assigns a boarding window, earlier is better. Check-in lines and security move at their own pace.
  • Tag your bags before you get to the port. Curbside porters will take your checked luggage, but cruise line tags need to be attached and legible.
  • Pack strategically. Keep medications, valuables, documents, and anything you’ll want in the first few hours in your carry-on luggage.
  • Have your documents ready to hand over. Passport or government-issued ID, your printed or digital boarding pass, and any required health documents. Don’t bury these in a carry-on or checked bag.
  • Download the cruise line app ahead of time. Most major lines let you complete check-in, make dining reservations, and access a digital keycard through their app. It speeds up the embarkation process noticeably.
  • Dress for Miami, not the ship. It’s hot and humid year-round. Light, breathable layers work well, and you can always grab a jacket once you’re in the air conditioning onboard.
  • Lunch is waiting for you on the ship. Most cruise lines serve lunch on embarkation day. Skip the rushed meal near the terminal and board when you’re ready to eat.

Before or After Your Cruise: What to Do in Miami

Miami is so lively and abundant in attractions that one morning of exploration is a mere glimpse into the city. However, a glimpse is better than missing it altogether.

So, if you have extra time on either end of your trip, here are the spots closest to the port that our local staff says are actually worth the detour.

The closest ones, approximately 5 minutes by car, are:

  • Bayside Marketplace (1.4 miles) — This is a lively waterfront marketplace with dining, shopping, and live music. It’s also the launch point for sightseeing boat tours around Biscayne Bay, which is a fun way to see the Miami skyline from the water.
  • Bayfront Park (1.9 miles) — 32 acres of waterfront green space right in downtown Miami. Worth a short walk, especially in the morning before the heat sets in.

A bit farther away, but still manageable are:

  • Brickell City Centre (2.6 miles) — Upscale dining and shopping in Miami’s financial district. Good for a pre-cruise dinner or a post-cruise afternoon before heading to the airport.
  • Wynwood Walls (3.6 miles) — The outdoor street art museum that put Wynwood on the map. The surrounding neighborhood is full of galleries, restaurants, and coffee shops. Bring your camera.
  • Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) (1.9 miles) — Rotating contemporary art exhibitions in a striking bayfront building. Easy to spend an hour or two here.
  • Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science (1.7 miles) — Great for families, with an aquarium, planetarium, and interactive science exhibits all under one roof.

FAQs About PortMiami

Here’s a quick overview of the additional questions our staff answers most frequently.

1. Is there food or coffee available at the terminal while I wait to board?

Options are limited, so don’t count on a proper meal at the port. A handful of spots are available near the terminals, including the Seaman’s Center (across from Terminal E), a café in the Port Administration building, and two cafeterias in the Royal Caribbean building.

Most other terminals only have vending machines or water stations. The better move is to grab breakfast near your hotel and head straight to the port.

Most cruise lines serve lunch on board on embarkation day anyway.

2. Can I store luggage at PortMiami if I want to explore Miami after disembarking?

PortMiami doesn’t offer on-site luggage storage due to security regulations.

If you’re planning to spend a few hours in the city before heading to the airport, your options are a late hotel checkout or a dedicated luggage storage service.

Stasher, LuggageHero, and Hold My Luggage all operate in Miami. The Hold My Luggage location at Bayside Marketplace is less than 1.5 miles from the port and a convenient option.

3. Are taxis and ride-shares available at PortMiami when I disembark?

Yes, taxis and ride-shares are available curbside at the terminals.

On busy disembarkation days, Uber and Lyft pickup areas can get congested, so have your app open and your ride ready to request as soon as you’re outside.

If you need an ADA-accessible vehicle, request one through your ride-share app upon arrival at the ground-level curbside area.

4. Is there a toll to use the PortMiami Tunnel?

No, the PortMiami Tunnel is toll-free for all vehicles. It was specifically designed to provide a free, direct connection between the port and I-395 and I-95.

5. What happens if my ship changes terminals last minute?

It’s rare, but it does happen, usually when a larger ship is in port or there’s a scheduling change.

Check your cruise line’s app the day before departure for any updates, and once you’re on the island, staff and electronic signage will direct you if anything has shifted.

6. Is PortMiami accessible for travelers with mobility needs?

Yes, all terminals are ADA-compliant, with accessible drop-off zones and elevators throughout.

For specific accommodations, contact the PortMiami ADA Coordinator or your cruise line at least 48 hours before departure.

Please note that our answers reflect our staff’s experience and, as such, may not be fully up to date, so please be sure to verify information on PortMiami’s or your cruise line’s official websites.
