When travelers think about visiting Washington, DC, they picture monuments, museums, and embassy-lined streets. For some visitors, though, the trip has a very different purpose: a kidney transplant, a living donation, or the follow-up care that comes with both.
Through a new relationship with the National Kidney Foundation (NKF), The Royal Sonesta Washington DC Dupont Circle and The Royal Sonesta Washington DC Capitol Hill is welcoming transplant recipients, donors, and their families with a comfortable place to stay and a way for every booking to give back.
Each year, more than 90,000 Americans wait for a life-saving kidney transplant, and behind every single patient is a concerned family navigating travel, time away from home, and costs that add up quickly.
A Campaign Built Around Urgency
Every day, patients and families wait for the call that could change their lives. NKF’s Lives Can’t Wait campaign is working to shorten that wait by raising awareness of organ donation, supporting patients and living donors, and advocating for greater access to transplantation.
“Too many patients and families face significant practical and financial burdens as they navigate the path to kidney transplantation,” said Marc Hurlbert, PhD, Chief Executive Officer of the National Kidney Foundation. “This campaign will help make travel for transplant-related care more manageable while giving Sonesta guests an opportunity to support our work on behalf of kidney patients, living donors and their families.”
A Home Base for the Journey
Located near MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, The Royal Sonesta Washington DC Dupont Circle and Capitol Hill offer some of the most spacious accommodations in the city, with guest rooms averaging 520 square feet. After long days of appointments, that extra room gives guests space to rest, recharge, and feel at home. Both hotels offer incredible on-site dining options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Riggsby is The Royal Sonesta Washington DC Dupont Circle’s signature restaurant from James Beard Award-winning Chef Michael Schlow. Bistro du Jour, a Parisian bistro at The Royal Sonesta Washington DC Capitol Hill, offers savory dishes such as Macaron au Foie, Steak Frites and Croque Madame.
Eligible guests can save 15% using code 4KIDNEYS. In addition, 5% of every qualifying booking using the promo code 4KIDNEYS is donated to the National Kidney Foundation, helping fund its programs and services for kidney patients and their families.
Support That Goes Beyond the Stay
NKF’s work reaches well beyond a hotel room. Whether someone is considering a transplant, exploring living donation, or preparing for surgery, the foundation offers free programs and services, including:
- Educational resources: the Kidney Learning Center and materials on chronic kidney disease, nutrition, and transplantation.
- NKF Peers: a mentoring program that connects patients with trained peers who have received dialysis or a transplant, or who live with a donated kidney.
- NKF Cares Helpline: a toll-free line at 855-653-2273 offering guidance in English and Spanish for patients, family members, and care partners.
- Advocacy: work to improve policies on kidney care, organ donation access, and legislative protections.
Two hotels with one goal: hospitality when it’s needed most
Hospitality has always been about taking care of people, especially when they need it most. If you or someone you love is traveling to DC for transplant-related care, book your stay with code 4KIDNEYS. If you’re not traveling, you can still help by sharing this story with someone who might need it, or by learning more about the Lives Can’t Wait campaign at kidney.org.
